Local Authority and Regional Assembly Staff Training

Under Section 549(1) of the Planning and Development Act 2024 (the Act), the Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) must provide education and training for staff of planning authorities, regional assemblies and An Coimisiún Pleanála.

The education and training focus on the role of these organisations under the Act and on issues related to proper planning and sustainable development. It also covers any other matters the OPR considers important to its work.

The first subpage includes training materials from staff training events for local authorities and regional assemblies. This includes presentation slides, recordings of the events, and briefing documents.

The second subpage features the Learning from Litigation legal bulletins. These bulletins explain key lessons from recent planning and environmental court cases. They highlight important legal decisions and emerging trends which  help understand how planning case law is changing. The bulletins are published every three months.

The Planning and Development Act 2024 was signed into law on 17 October 2024. The Act is being commenced on a phased basis to facilitate a smooth transition from the existing legislation to the new legislation. It is important to note that transitional arrangements are in place. This means that certain elements of the work of the OPR remain under the previous legislation during this time.

This website will be updated at the earliest opportunity to correspond with the commencement of the various Parts of the Act.
