Planning Regulator welcomes review

The Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) plays a vital role in enabling proper planning and sustainable development as set out in Government policy, including implementation of the National Planning Framework.

The work of the OPR assists in ensuring that Ireland develops sustainably by protecting our environment and enhancing our communities.

The legislative and policy context for planning in Ireland has evolved considerably since the OPR was established in 2019. The OPR has strongly supported implementation of this evolving legislative and policy context for planning by working with local authorities and wider stakeholders.

In addition, the OPR welcomes the commencement of a review of the role and functions of the OPR announced today by the Minister of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and Minister of State for Planning today, 24th March 2026.

This decision implements recommendations of both the Government’s Housing Plan Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025-2030, and the Accelerating Infrastructure Report and the Office and its staff will fully engage with and input to the review in order that it informs the best positioning and role of the organisation within Ireland’s evolving planning process into the future.
