The OPR recognises that to help address the increasing demand for housing across the country, it is critical that existing buildings are used more effectively, and the issues of vacancy and dereliction are addressed. In addition to being a cost-effective way of providing more homes, bringing vacant and derelict properties back into use can also help to transform our urban centres into more attractive environments where local communities can thrive. The OPR is organising this planning training webinar for local authority elected members to highlight government policy and supports as well as initiatives used by local authorities in dealing with vacancy and dereliction.
The presentations will deal with:
- Vacant Homes – Policy and Supports
- Dealing with Vacancy and Dereliction – the Repair and Lease Scheme
- Activating Derelict and Vacant Property using Compulsory Purchase Powers
The speakers will include:
- Ann Marie O’Connor, Principal Officer, Vacant Homes Unit, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage;
- James Beggan, Vacant Homes Unit, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage; and
- Senior Personnel from Waterford and Limerick City and County Councils.
